Joan Hodges-Wu serves as the Founder and Executive Director of Arrived. A licensed social worker with nearly two decades of experience working with asylum-seeking survivors or torture, Joan has dedicated her career to transforming how organizations work with trauma-affected immigrants. Her expertise has been recognized by the U.S. Office of Refugee Resettlement and the National Consortium of Torture Treatment Programs.<\/span><\/p>

Under Joan’s leadership, Arrived has grown from a $4,000 GoFundMe campaign into a nationally recognized nonprofit, navigating startup challenges, COVID, and a shifting immigration landscape along the way.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Joan holds a Masters of Arts in Refugee Care from the University of Essex and a Masters of Social Work from the Catholic University of America. She is also a Returned Peace Corps Volunteer who served in Central Asia.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Madeleine’s role is dedicated to ensuring that programs and employees have the resources they need to operate smoothly and efficiently at Arrived. As Chief Operations Officer, she also supports the Executive Director in achieving the organization’s mission through overseeing operations, reporting, hiring, and finances while also coordinating Arrived’s nationwide technical training initiatives.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Madeleine joined Arrived in 2021. Fabiola joined Arrived after five years at the U.S. Department of State, where she managed global operations for the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program. An expert in humanitarian and refugee policy, she has spent her career building durable solutions for displaced people. Now she ensures that refugees who have found a home in the DMV have the support they need to build a foundation for generations to come. Nicole serves as Senior Executive Advisor at Arrived, driving strategic initiatives spanning program design, monitoring and evaluation, and organizational development. She previously served as Arrived\u2019s Deputy Executive Director.<\/span><\/p>

Prior to joining Arrived, Nicole spent nearly 12 years in the U.S. Department of State, including as Deputy Director of the Refugee Processing Center, modernizing technology to support historic refugee resettlement. Her public service included creating criminal justice reform programs in Africa, negotiating UN resolutions, coordinating global crisis responses, and serving as Acting Executive Director of the Department\u2019s humanitarian affairs bureau.\u00a0 Earlier in her career, she launched global experiential learning programs as Assistant Director at the Buffett Institute and managed grants and communications for the American India Foundation in New Delhi.<\/span><\/p>

Nicole holds a B.A. in Political Science from Northwestern University, an MSc in International Development Management from the London School of Economics, and received executive leadership training from Harvard Business School. <\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Arrived is proud to employ staff from the same communities we serve.
